HOW TO LAYER YOUR SKINCARE PRODUCTS

When your skin is healthy and smooth, it gives you a boost of self-confidence, lets your products work more efficiently, and makes it easier to apply makeup. But I get it: Skincare can be intimidating. There are so many products and it can be confusing how they all fit into your routine. Today, I’m here to show you that it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Rule of thumb: Apply your skincare products from thinnest consistency to thickest (or from liquids to creams).

It can be boiled down to just four easy steps (but feel free to sprinkle in some extras depending on your unique skin concerns):

Step 1: Cleanse & Exfoliate

Cleansers should remove makeup and grime without harsh ingredients that can strip the skin of moisture. Twice a week, you’ll also want to exfoliate your skin to slough off dead skin cells and create a smooth, even surface.

Step 2: Prep

A toner is key to clarifying your skin and balancing out your skin’s pH levels so it feels hydrated—not stripped. It also preps your skin so that it better absorbs the rest of your products and ingredients that follow.

Step 3: Treat

This part gets a little tricky as your treatment plan depends on your unique concerns. You might want to start your treatment step with a morning or night serum first. I always recommend using a daily serum, which penetrates the deepest layers of your skin. Then, if needed, apply any spot treatments.

Step 4: Hydrate & Protect

If your skin’s extra thirsty, start off with a face oil (a little goes a long way). For everyday use, massage on a moisturizer to strengthen your skin’s barrier and lock in all those good ingredients. If you’re using an eye cream, apply it with your ring finger—being careful not to tug.

Lastly, and most importantly, don’t forget your SPF during the day. I recommend a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
