MOTHERHOOD & MAKEUP

As Mother's Day approaches, I want to share a little story about what I hear from so many clients about their mothers and how being a mother influences my approach to beauty.

I hear it all the time from makeup lesson clients: "My mom never wore makeup" or “My mom never taught me how to apply makeup.”

I get it.

Not all women wear makeup or feel comfortable teaching their children how to apply it. It’s possible to go your whole life without really knowing how to apply blush – even when you know how to run a company and/or a household.

As a mom of two girls myself, I can see how aware they are of what I do. And since makeup is very much a part of what I do, they see me set it up when brides come to my home studio. They "ooh" and "ahh" with me when I unbox a new beauty product. They watch as I apply my own makeup.

“Can I wear some too?” Lillie, my oldest, asks.

My first instinct is to protect her feelings of self-worth. She’s 5 years old; she doesn’t need makeup to be beautiful. After all, beauty is not skin deep. It's something we feel inside.

But I feel inherently beautiful AND I like to wear makeup. Both are true.

I tell my daughters that makeup can be a fun tool that helps us tell a story about who we are. Like a cute dress or funky headband – it’s another way to enhance our look.

If my girls grow up and don’t want to wear makeup – that’s totally okay with me. Being a makeup artist though, I can't wait to one day teach them how to use makeup to highlight their natural beauty if that’s something they want to do.

I know it won’t be for a while though, so in the meantime, I’m excited that I can step into those shoes “teacher” for some of you. I love nothing more than to teach new skills and help my clients find new renewed confidence.
